Brooklyn School Renamed in Honor of Slain NYPD Detective Wenjian Liu, First School in Brooklyn Named After Asian-American

DYKER HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (WABC) — A school in Brooklyn was renamed in honor of an NYPD detective who was shot and killed in the line of duty nearly a decade later.

PS 331 in Dyker Heights is now called Detective Wenjian Liu School of Civic Education and Entrepreneurship.

Detective Liu was murdered along with his partner Detective Rafael Ramos on December 20, 2014.

Detective Liu’s widow, Sanny Liu, as well as his daughter, Angelina, who was born in 2017 after her father’s murder, attended Thursday’s opening ceremony.

The 6-year-old girl never met her father.

“I would tell him that his father was a true American hero, who sacrificed his life to protect his community,” Liu said.

Angelina’s mother had only been married three months when her world shattered in 2014.

“It means a lot that people know about immigrant history, that we can live our American dream,” Liu said.

Det. Ramos’ widow was also there and said her husband would have loved to be a grandfather to Jaden, who is now 3 years old.

“It is priceless to see so many people come out after 10 years to honor his memory, it is incredible,” said Martiza Ramos.

Liu was asked what she would think if her daughter wanted to be a police officer one day, too.

“I would be very proud of her because she is following in her father’s footsteps,” Liu said.

Councilwoman Susan Zhuang said this “is not just a simple name change, it is a reminder that generations to come will receive an education based on civic leadership and the values that Detective Liu held so close to his heart.”
