Ecotivists temporarily blocked the runways of Munich Airport

In Germany, early Saturday morning, environmental activists from the organization “Last Generation” entered the interior of the airport in Munich and glued themselves to the runway.

For some time, all aircraft movement was completely interrupted. More than 60 takeoffs and landings were canceled, but soon the airport management managed to normalize the situation. At seven o’clock in the morning the first plane took off from the northern runway.

In its press release, “The Last Generation” reports that six people entered the airfield at 04:45 in the morning in two groups in different places. After they were glued to the runway using a concrete solution, all exits from the two terminals were blocked. To get to the airfield, activists made holes in the airport fence.

“The sites of climate destruction through fossil energy sources will continue to be heavily visited,” activists said in connection with the airport blockade.

The police detained six protesters and two members of the group who helped them cut the fence. A case will be opened against all those detained for dangerous interference with air traffic.

By their actions, members of the “Last Generation” group intended to remind passengers at the beginning of the extended weekend on the eve of the Trinity holiday about the harmfulness of flights. According to activists, about 10% of Germans are therefore responsible for warming and climate change. Activists are demanding decisive action from politicians to prevent climate catastrophe.

During Whitsuntide every year a massive wave of travelers is expected. They rank second in terms of the number of trips after the Easter holidays. But this year Munich Airport had 7% more flights scheduled than last year. A total of 350 thousand passengers were expected.

“Such criminal actions pose a danger to aircraft traffic and harm climate protection, since they only cause misunderstanding,” German Interior Minister Nancy Feser commented on the activists’ actions. She called for consistent punishments for the perpetrators and a review of the airport’s security measures.

Activists respond wrote on social media X that Feser is “promising enhanced security measures to protect political lies and airline profits.”
