Singer Nemo from Switzerland became the winner of Eurovision 2024

The final of the Eurovision music competition, one of the most prestigious pop music competitions in the world, took place in Malmö on Saturday evening. This year’s winner became Swiss singer Nemo with the song “Code”. This is the first Eurovision winner to come out as non-binary. In the song, he talks about his journey to realizing and accepting his own identity.

Second place took Croatian rapper Baby Lasagna, the third – Ukrainian duo Alyona Alyona (Alena Savranenko) and Jerry Heil (Yana Shemaeva).

Contest accompanied demonstrations by pro-Palestinian activists who demanded the removal of Israeli representative Eden Golan from participation. Nevertheless, Golan performed, and the jury awarded her fifth place. The song she presented at Eurovision was originally called “October Rain”, but the organizers saw in the title an allusion to the events of October 7, 2023, when Israel was attacked by the Hamas group, designated a terrorist group in the United States and Europe, and demanded change the name because Eurovision claims to be a competition free of politics. The final version of the song is called “Hurricane”.

In the audience voting, the representative of Croatia received first place, second – Israel, third – Ukraine.

Musicians from 25 countries took part in the competition. The representative of the Netherlands, singer Joost Klein, was disqualified the day before due to inappropriate behavior: he had an argument with one of the employees.

Russia has not participated in Eurovision since 2022. They stopped inviting her to participate after the start of the war in Ukraine.
