The International Ice Hockey Federation disqualified the goalkeeper of the Russian national team

Disciplinary Committee of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) disqualified for six months at the club level and for three years at the national team level, the goalkeeper of the Russian national team Ivan Fedotov for playing for CSKA Moscow despite the ban from the federation.

The Russian team is prohibited from conducting international transfers. Such a one-year ban against the team was already in effect, and it was extended for another two years, until August 2026.

The Russian Hockey Federation was fined one million Swiss francs ($1.1 million). The decision can be appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne. On the federation website it saysthat it will be done.

Fedotov was drafted into the army in 2022 after signing a contract with the NHL club Philadelphia Flyers. A year later, he signed a contract with CSKA, despite the existing contract with the American team.

The IIHF banned him from playing for the Russian club, but this was ignored. After returning from the army, he played 49 games for CSKA in the regular season and playoffs. The goalkeeper’s personal statistics in these matches were the worst in his career; in the playoffs the team was eliminated in the first round, losing to Lokomotiv.

In March, Fedotov still moved to Philadelphia. The NHL is not part of the international federation; the decision on disqualification does not apply to the league. Due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Russian national team is not allowed to participate in international games and probably will not participate in the Winter Olympics, so this ban does not actually affect the hockey player’s participation in the national team.
