Women in London now have the right to attend the Garrick Club.

The Garrick, a British gentlemen’s club with almost two centuries of history, has finally allowed women to join the establishment. reports BBC. In recent years, the club has repeatedly refused to grant women the right to attend the club.

Last Tuesday, in a review of the legal language surrounding membership, members of the club, located in London’s West End, voted to allow women to join the club. Almost 60% were in favor.

A review of the club’s rules by senior judges found that there was nothing in the Garrick’s bylaws that prevented women from joining the club.

A vote required a 50% majority, although previous votes on women’s membership had always required a two-thirds majority.

The Garrick Club was founded in 1831 and is one of the oldest private clubs in the world. The club’s purpose was to “promote the revival of the dramatic art” and it was to become a place where “actors and people of refined taste could meet on equal terms.”

In March, the Guardian newspaper managed to obtain a list of club members. Among its approximately one and a half thousand members were dozens of judges of the High, Supreme, Appeal and District Courts, hundreds of senior barristers, dozens of politicians, famous musicians and actors, including Stephen Fry, Benedict Cumberbatch, Matthew Macfadyen, journalists and His Majesty Charles III.

The club’s charter allows women to visit the club only at the invitation of one of the club members and accompanied by a man throughout the visit.

In late April, musicians Sting and Mark Knopfler signed a letter to leading theater producers and actors warning that they would resign from the club if its members refused to approve the decision to admit women.

The letter was also signed by actor Stephen Fry, West End and Broadway producer Carl Sydow and The Crown executive producer Matthew Byam Shaw. is told in a BBC publication.
