NATO deploys combat forces in Romania

NATO Deputy Secretary-General Mircea Guiwana said that a permanent NATO combat group led by France will be established in Romania.

The Deputy Secretary-General said: “A very important meeting of NATO Defense Ministers will take place next week. I am optimistic that we will be able to take a joint decision on the creation of a NATO combat group in Romania, permanent under the leadership of France”,

Other NATO countries are expected to contribute troops for a permanent presence in Romania.

Joanne said that after 2014, the alliance decided to create four groups: three of them are located in the Baltic states and one more in Poland. The gathering in Romania will be the fifth for NATO in Eastern Europe.

British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace has said that RAF Typhoon fighter jets will be sent to patrol Romanian airspace due to the situation in Ukraine.

According to him, if Russian President Vladimir Putin intends to invade Ukraine, two things will happen: an increase in NATO forces on the Russian border and an increase in defense spending of NATO members. Wallace noted that the consequences of a possible invasion of Ukraine would not be in Russia’s strategic interests.
