Minister of Higher Education: Egypt is capable of achieving leadership in various fields, including the field of scientific research

The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Ayman Ashour, confirmed that publishing about Egypt in international journals is an important indicator of the quality of scientific research and its keeping up with international standards, and allows sharing knowledge with the international community and gaining new experiences from researchers in various parts of the world.

This came in a statement by the Minister, commenting on the publication of “Nature” magazine. In its issue issued on April 29, Al-Alamiya wrote a scientific article about the reference genome project for the Egyptians and the ancient Egyptians, under the title “The Egypt Genome Project”.

He said Dr. Ashour, publishing this article in “Nature” magazine is a testament to the quality of scientific research conducted in Egypt, and this study shows the ability of Egyptian scientists to conduct high-level scientific research at the international level, and it is also an important step towards achieving Egypt’s vision. To become a regional center for innovation.

The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research stressed in his statement that Egypt is capable of achieving leadership in various fields, including the field of scientific research.

For her part, Dr. Gina El-Feki, Acting President of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, explained that the article involved a group of Egyptian scientists, namely Dr. Mohamed Abdel Moneim from the Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University Medical Research Center And regenerative medicine, Dr. Nevin Soliman from the Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University Medical Research and Regenerative Medicine Center, Dr. Ahmed Mostafa from the American University in Cairo Medical Research and Regenerative Medicine Center, Dr. Yehia Gad from the National Research Center Egyptian Museum of Civilizations, and Dr. Wael Hassan from the Research Center

Dr. Gina El-Feki noted that “Nature” magazine It is considered one of the most prominent scientific periodicals in the world. It is a British scientific periodical published in the English language. It was first published in November 1869, and the field of physics and biology is one of the most important specialties of the magazine.

It is worth noting that the reference genome project for Egyptians and ancient Egyptians is one of the major national projects launched by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, as the project was signed between the Ministry of Education and the Center for Medical Research and Regenerative Medicine during the year 2021.

The project aims to draw a reference genetic map for the Egyptian people, which includes identifying the genetic factors affecting the response to the causes of epidemics, as well as identifying the genetic influences associated with the effect of drugs and the treatment of various diseases, which helps to activate Personalized Medicine and Precision Medicine.

It contributes to identifying the people most vulnerable to viral infections and the most vulnerable to violent health setbacks that require special health care. It also aims to study the reference genome of the ancient Egyptians, as well as studying genes related to some diseases. , such as heart diseases and tumors that are prevalent among Egyptians, as well as common genetic diseases in Egypt.

Many research bodies participate in the project, namely, the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, and the Center for Medical Research and Medicine. Al-Tajdidi, at the Ministry of Defense, the National Research Center, Cairo University, Ain Shams University, Mansoura University, Alexandria University, Nile University, the Museum of Civilization, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, Aswan Heart Hospital “Magdi Yacoub Foundation”, Shafa El Orman Hospital, and the National Institute for Disease Research. Endemic diseases and the liver, the Ministry of Health and Population, and the National Center for Surveillance and Disease Control.

The budget of the project amounts to 2 billion pounds, and it aims to study samples from 100,000 Egyptian citizens, and so far it has been implemented. Many workshops were held to raise the capabilities of young Egyptian researchers and scientists in this field, in cooperation with the Egyptian Knowledge Bank and the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom.

A central laboratory for genetic research was completed. At the Center for Medical Research and Regenerative Medicine, researchers were trained to carry out complete human genome sequencing and exome sequencing analyses. Specialized doctors were also trained to examine volunteers and collect samples related to rare diseases and cancerous tumors. More than 300 samples for rare diseases and more than 350 samples for tumors and fibrosis were collected. Liver, determining the complete genetic sequence of 698 samples, and creating a reference copy of the human genome for Egyptians. This effort was crowned by the scientific publication of the project in “Nature” magazine.
