MLS star Eduard Lowen reveals heartbreaking news that his wife is being treated for brain cancer

MLS star Eduard Lowen has announced that his wife has brain cancer.

Lowen, who plays for St. Louis City SC, hasn’t seen the field in over two months.

He told reporters on Thursday that his wife, Ilona, is, ‘doing well at the moment, thank God. She’s doing really well and we’ll see how it’s progressing.’

Lowen said that his wife’s health had gotten ‘worse and worse’ as she dealt with ‘sever headaches,’ and she ended up having surgery in early April.

The midfielder requested prayers for Ilona during the press conference, and noted that his wife was happy to see him playing again.

He also thanked the organization and his teammates for not rushing him back.

After Lowen was ruled out with a hamstring injury in March, St. Louis coach Bradley Carnell said the following month, ‘Edu, we’ve given him a bit of space, he needs to deal with some things away from the field right now, and that’s where we’d like to leave that discussion,’ via the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Lowen said on Thursday,  Being out on the pitch and having fun with the guys and thinking about something else is amazing. And I’m very, very thankful that I can be healthy again.’

Lowen, 27, moved to MLS last year after stops with Nurmberg, Augsburg, Hertha Berlin and Bochum.

He starred last season, scoring six goals and registering nine assists as St. Louis finished first in the Western Conference, but has played just three games this season.
