Russia is the most active threat to US elections

There are a growing number of foreign actors, including non-state ones, seeking to influence American elections. Russia, China and Iran are the most significant among them. This statement was made by Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines at a hearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee. About it reported Voice of America and Reuters.

Russia remains the most active foreign threat to US elections, Haynes said. “The Russian government’s goals in such influence operations typically include undermining trust in U.S. democratic institutions, exacerbating sociopolitical divisions in the United States, and weakening Western support for Ukraine,” the Director of National Intelligence said.

Congressional committees began looking into reports of foreign – particularly Russian – attempts to influence American public opinion after U.S. intelligence agencies believed Kremlin-backed entities were trying to boost Donald Trump’s chances of winning in 2016.

Haines estimates that the government’s election protection efforts have become more effective since the 2016 presidential election.

Wednesday’s hearing was the committee’s first public hearing on the topic of the 2024 US election.
