From Catherine Zeta Jones and Carys Douglas to Cindy Crawford and Kaia Gerber – the celebs’ closet-raiding children who borrow their parents’ iconic looks

From Oscar dresses to bespoke designer gowns, celeb kids have their pick of some iconic fashion moments.

Instead of heading to the mall to pick out a prom dress, the kids of the rich and famous can shop closer to home – raiding their parents’ closet.

More and more are digging into the archives and rewearing some designer gems for their own big occasions, with the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolies’ daughters trying out some recognisable looks.

And with designer gems from the likes of Versace, Alexander McQueen and Dior sitting in wardrobes, there’s plenty of opportunity for the celeb children to have their own iconic fashion moment.

Catherine Zeta Jones and Carys Douglas 

Catherine Zeta-Jones’ mini me daughter Carys wore one of her mother’s iconic dresses for her 21st birthday.

Carys wore the Oscar-winner’s old pink silk and lace slip dress from 25 years ago and looked sensational in the Ungaro number for her milestone birthday.

‘The most perfect 21st I could ask for !’ wrote Carys in her Instagram caption, to which Catherine responded: ‘You deserve it sweetheart ❤️.’

The dress was first worn by Welsh beauty Catherine at the 1999 MTV Movie Awards.

Gwyneth’s 2002 Oscars gown was declared ‘a fashion disaster’ by critics at the time, but that didn’t stop her daughter Apple Martin, 19, from trying it for size last summer.

Apple, whose dad is Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, posed in the gothic Alexander McQueen dress for an Instagram pic.  

Gwyneth shared the stunning snap to her Instagram Stories after a fan asked her: ‘Does Apple ever wear any of your fashion archives?’

Gwyneth previously told Vogue she was ‘hurt’ over criticism over the look back in 2002: ‘Everybody really hated this [dress]… but I think it’s kind of dope,’ she said. ‘I’m into it.’

She continued: ‘I had a weird hangover about it for a while because people were really critical. I think at the time it was too goth, I think people thought it was too hard, so I think it sort of shocked people. But I like it.’

 Leni Klum, 19, was living the dream when it came to choosing her prom dress in 2022, having her pick of her model mum’s closet.

The then 18-year-old borrowed Heidi’s strapless slip dress, which she wore to a 1998 Comic Relief event. 

Leni posted the dress to social media with the simple caption ‘prom night in mamas dress’  while her mother commented with a lovestruck emoji.

Brooke Shields and Rowan Francis Henchy 

Another celeb kid to rework a look for their prom was Brooke Shields’ daughter Rowan Francis Henchy who wore the actress’ famous red Golden Globes gown to her prom back in 2021.

Brooke wore the strapless dress in 1998 when she was nominated for best television actress in a musical or comedy series for her show Suddenly Susan. 

‘I thought it was a special night when I was nominated for a Golden Globe and wore this dress in 1998, but nothing could have prepared me to see my daughter wearing it to her prom ❤️ proud mama!’ Brooke wrote on Instagram.

A then 16-year-old Zahara Jolie Pitt raided her mum’s closet when she joined her siblings and Angelina on the red carpet back in 2021.

Zahara was by Angelina’s side for the premiere of Marvel’s Eternals and wore her mum’s gold Elie Saab Couture gown that she wore to the 2014 Academy Awards.

Angelina gushed about the family fashion at the premiere, revealing ‘my kids are all mixed with vintage, and in my old Oscars dress. We did all vintage and upcycled my old stuff.’

Zahara’s sister Shiloh also borrowed from Angelina, this time for a 2019 event to promote the 2021 movie Eternals. 

Shiloh wore her mother’s black-and-white Dior gown that she chose for 2019 press tour for Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil, having the designer garment altered. 

Cindy Crawford and Kaia Gerber

Kaia Gerber looked the spitting image of her supermodel mother Cindy Crawford as she headed to her 18th birthday bash at New York’s The Edition Hotel back in 2019.

The runway star showed off her model figure in a leather dominatrix-inspired Versace ensemble – a re-vamped version of the iconic leather dress that Cindy wore to the MTV VMAs in 1992.

Kaia channelled her model mother with both her outfit and her voluminous hair for her big night. 

Salma Hayek and Valentina Paloma Pinault 

Salma Hayek and her daughter Valentina both wowed in the same dress 26 years apart.

Salma wore the Isaac Mizrahi gown to the Fire and Ice Ball back in 1997 before loaning her 15-year-old daughter the stunning gown for the 95th Annual Academy Awards in 2023.

Damian admitted in a recent interview that he and his mother, 58, are no stranger to sharing clothes.

Speaking to The Sunday Times while promoting his directorial debut Strictly Confidential, Damian, 22, said: ‘I steal leather trousers all the time. Jackets are always great. Any big over-sized blazers she steals in a heart beat.’

And for a Pat McGrath event in 2019, Liz’s lookalike son wore a safety-pin-adorned black suit by Versace in homage to his mother’s most iconic look – the revealing Versace gown that shot her to worldwide fame when she wore it to the premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral in 1994.
