The Russian Ministry of Justice added Freedom House to the list of undesirable organizations

The Russian Ministry of Justice introduced scroll so-called undesirable organizations: the American non-governmental organization Freedom House, the movement for the independence of Karelia Stop Occupation of Karelia and the fund for assistance to the Ukrainian military “Come Back Alive”.

Freedom House was founded in 1941. For more than 40 years, the organization has been researching the state of political and civil liberties around the world.

The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office indicated that the organization called for comprehensive assistance to the Ukrainian army, confiscation of “frozen” Russian assets in favor of Ukraine, as well as increased sanctions pressure.

Movement for the independence of Karelia Stop the Occupation of Karelia based in 2012. The stated goal of the organization is to create an independent national state for Karelians, Pomors, Vepsians and other nationalities, which will adhere to “traditional Nordic values.”

In 2023, members of the organization announced the creation of the Karelian Battalion named after Vasily Levonen as part of the International Legion of Ukraine.

“Come Back Alive” is a fund to help the Ukrainian military, created in 2014. The organization provides military units with weapons, vehicles, thermal imagers and other equipment. Currently it is one of the largest volunteer foundations in Ukraine.

  • The list of “undesirable organizations” has existed in Russia since 2015. At the moment, more than 160 structures are included in it.
  • Inclusion on the list means that the organization is prohibited from operating in the country, and Russian citizens are prohibited from collaborating with it under threat of criminal prosecution.
