A session at a festival"Sharjah Reading for Children" Discusses the relationship between music and mathematics

Sharjah, 3 May / WAM / A session held within the activities of the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival 2024 discussed the relationship between mathematics and music, in which Moroccan Dr. Azizi Ifzaran, a researcher in mathematics, and Malaysian author and music trainer Young Young participated.

Efzaran, for his part, said, “While music is the language of feelings and mathematics is the language of reason and logic, there is an aspect of music through which we can describe it as a science, not just an art. The well-known science of studying sounds is branched out by the science of studying musical sounds. In the era of Pythagoras, it was Mathematics includes 4 sections: music, astronomy, arithmetic, and engineering.

He stressed that music helps children in many areas, including arithmetic, abstraction, decoding, concentration, memory activation, communication, team spirit, self-confidence and refinement, and most importantly, bringing fun and happiness.

For her part, Trainer Young Young touched on the relationship between music and mathematics. She said: “It is necessary to develop the concept of coordination in children through melodies and the connection between music and mathematics to achieve this. Music focuses on daily experiences while mathematics focuses on equations and results.”

Young Young presented many musical examples and various rhythms that illustrate this relationship and confirms that musical thinking is an artistic response to mathematical concepts. She pointed out that through tones, melodies and rhythms, music can embody many mathematical concepts such as proportions, harmony and symmetry.
