Russia opens a naval base in the Red Sea

Deputy Chairman of the Sovereignty Council, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, told Asharq Al-Awsat. Sudan does not object to the presence of a Russian naval base on its territory if that does not threaten the country’s national security.

“If any country wants to open a base, and this is in our interest, we have no problems in relations with anyone, whether it is Russia or anyone else,” he said.

It was agreed to establish a base for the Russian Navy in Sudan in November 2020. It is assumed that the maximum number of personnel will not exceed 300 people. At the same time, no more than four Russian ships, including those with nuclear power plants, will be able to stay there.

It was reported that they expected in Khartoum to receive economic aid from Moscow on the condition of renting a naval base in Port Sudan on the Red Sea.
