‘Lempicka’ to Close on Broadway

“Lempicka,” a musical about Art Deco painter Tamara de Lempicka, will play its final Broadway performance on Sunday, May 19.

The show has struggled to draw crowds since opening on April 14. Last week, for instance, “Lempicka” had its weakest showing yet, earning $288,102 and playing at 71% capacity. That was the lowest total for any Broadway show during that period.

The production had hoped that the Tony Awards might give it a boost. However, when nominations were announced on Tuesday, “Lempicka” failed to pick up one for best musical. It earned three nominations in total, including nods for best leading actress in a musical for Eden Espinosa and best supporting actress in a musical for Amber Iman. The show was also recognized for its scenic design.

In a statement, the “Lempicka” producers said: “We are so proud of our production and the family of artists and artisans who’ve shaped it. Few knew better than Tamara de Lempicka that art isn’t easy but always worth the effort.”

There’s been a flurry of new productions opening on Broadway in recent weeks, all jockeying for Tony Awards. They include musical adaptations of hit movies and books such as “The Outsiders,” “Water for Elephants” and “The Notebook,” as well as plays such as “Mary Jane” with Rachel McAdams and “Mother Play” with Jessica Lange and Jim Parsons. The month of April also brought the debut of “Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club,” a West End transfer that stars Eddie Redmayne, as well as “Stereophonic,” a drama about a rock group that earned a record-breaking 13 Tony nominations, the most ever awarded to a play.
