The UAE establishes 5 bakeries that provide 3.6 million loaves of loaf to the people of the Gaza Strip

The automated bakeries that the UAE sent to the Gaza Strip to help alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the Strip succeeded in providing more than 3.6 million loaves of loaves to more than 1.2 million beneficiaries from the Strip within 3 months, from mid-February to mid-May.

The UAE initiative aims to contribute to confronting the acute bread shortage within the Gaza Strip in light of the current circumstances, and to support the food security of the people in the face of hunger, especially since the Strip is facing a severe crisis due to food shortages.

Reports from the Gaza Strip confirm that many flour stores were destroyed, most of the bakeries that produced daily food for the people were out of service, and fuel and flour could not enter except in scarce quantities that were not sufficient to meet the minimum daily needs of the people. The number of bakeries that served the population of the Gaza Strip before the war was 140, and they were struggling to meet the needs of about 2.3 million people living in Gaza. However, the head of the Gaza Bakeries Association, Abdel Nasser Al-Ajrami, said last February that only 8 bakeries were operating at their normal production capacity in the Gaza Strip.

Recent international reports confirmed that the bread crisis is continuing. In response to these critical and emergency situations, in mid-February, the UAE sent 5 automated bakeries to the Egyptian city of Al-Arish in preparation for their introduction into the Gaza Strip, as part of the “Al-Fares” initiative. The current production capacity for each One of the five bakeries, about 17,500 loaves per hour, and if flour, water and fuel are available, the bakeries can operate 24 hours a day without stopping.

The bakeries were able, during the 3 months until mid-May, to provide 3 million, 611,550 loaves of bread and 120,385 bundles for 1,203,850 beneficiaries in the Gaza Strip, especially in crowded displacement areas, which contributed to alleviating the burden of the humanitarian and food crisis they are experiencing due to the ongoing displacement in various areas of the Strip, and bakeries were used by 229,000 people. And 606 kilograms of flour.

While the recovery and reconstruction of Gaza’s bakeries requires time and effort, and while pressure continues on bakeries currently operating in the Strip, the Emirati bakeries project continues to work in order to alleviate the burden of this daily suffering and support the people of the Gaza Strip. To fill some of the current gap in the Gaza bread supply chain, and to provide its people with the minimum daily bread needs that constitute a lifeline for the people of the Gaza Strip.
