F1: Lando Norris wins the first Grand Prix of his career in a race in Miami ahead of Max Verstappen, first point for Alpine

The 111th start in Formula 1 was the right one for Lando Norris. At 24, the Briton won his very first career Grand Prix, Sunday May 5, on the sunny Miami circuit. Starting fifth, the McLaren driver benefited from a fortunate boost mid-race when the safety car entered the track in front of the wrong car following a collision between Logan Sargeant (Williams) and Kevin Magnussen (Haas ).

Instead of coming in front of Lando Norris, leader after the pit stops of his competitors, the “safety car” positioned itself in the headlights of Max Verstappen, then second. Thus leaving the field open to the Mclaren, which broke away thanks to a hellish pace when reaccelerating. Never to be seen again by the three-time world champion until the checkered flag.

With this result, the native of Bristol brings the Dutchman down to the regular for the first time this season. Verstappen won four Grands Prix and both sprints, only being forced to retire in Australia. A tough end to the weekend for him, who has not stopped complaining about the grip of his Red Bull since Friday but who was a good sport by congratulating the winner at the finish. Third, Charles Leclerc completes the podium.

For his part, Esteban Ocon scored Alpine’s first point in 2024 thanks to his 10th place. Passed nine laps from the finish by Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), the Frenchman resisted the return of Nico Hülkenberg (Haas) to stay in the points, when Pierre Gasly, 12th, also signed his best performance of the season.

In the drivers’ standings, Max Verstappen still leads the way with 136 points and even increases his lead over his teammate Sergio Pérez (101) and Charles Leclerc (98). The man of the day, Lando Norris, is closing in on fourth place behind Carlos Sainz (85 against 83).
