Floods kill 107 people in Brazil

Due to severe flooding in southern Brazil died at least 107 people, another 136 are missing.

Rescue operations are ongoing. Yesterday, May 9, rescuers reached the horse, which had spent about two days on the roof of a house surrounded by water.

More than 165 thousand residents of the affected state of Rio Grande do Sul were forced to leave their flooded homes, fleeing by boats and helicopters. The flooding has destroyed infrastructure and bridges, blocking access to the state capital, where store shelves are empty and looting occurs at night, Reuters writes.

State authorities have already said that, according to preliminary estimates, at least $3.7 billion will be needed to recover from the flooding, which also affected farms. Federal authorities intend to assess the scale of the consequences after the water recedes.

More rainfall is forecast for Rio Grande do Sul in the coming days, which could lead to further rises in water levels.
