See Timothée Chalamet in his first CHANEL video campaign

In what must be the most beautiful collision of worlds, CHANEL has unveiled an exclusive for the long-awaited Bleu de Chanel campaign film, starring Timothée Chalamet and Havana Rose Liu, directed by Martin Scorsese.

The short film looks to move through iconic NYC scenes: the subway, loft apartments, dimly-lit bars. Described as a depiction of ‘a man set off on a quest to find himself’ Scorsese’s work will explore truth, optimism, authenticity and vulnerability. It feels perfectly in sync with Chalamet’s rising star. Since his breakout role in Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name, he’s gone on to star in Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird the Dune film trilogy, an upcoming Bob Dylan biopic and a remake of the Roald Dahl’s Wonka.

We’ve been at our wits ends waiting for this to release, and now it finally has. Shot in NYC, the campaign represents a new era for Chanel. Chalamet brings a youthful boldness, while Scorsese – a legend in cinema – knows the house all too well (he shot the original Bleu de Chanel campaign back in 2010, starring the late actor Gaspard Ulliel). “I’m a New York boy and a New York actor; he’s the ultimate New York director and artist” Chalamet shared.

Where can I watch the film?

Who else is featured in the film?

Chalamet is joined by love interest Havana Rose Liu, who transports him from his dimly lit solitary black and white to a technicolour, Scorsese-graded world.  On the film, Scorsese says, it’s about “the conflict between celebrity and staying true to being an artist” and not allowing the siren song of fame to warp one’s own reality. Of course, touches of blue flit from scene to scene. Chalamet is entranced by the sightings of his own face on a screen, before Liu forcefully jolts him out of the reverie. Love trumps fame. New York trumps all.

When did Timothée Chalamet start working with CHANEL?

Chalamet was announced as an ambassador for the house back in May, specifically fronting the iconic masculine fragrance. It couldn’t be more fitting; a young French-American film star and one of the most established French fashion houses (arguably ever). The campaign itself is set for release October 16, but you’ll find an exclusive look into the making of below:

The fragrance in question…

Bleu de Chanel is an aromatic scent with notes of sandalwood, citrus, labdanum, vetiver and mint. Originally composed by Jacques Polge, it’s now care-taken by Chanel In-House Perfumer-Creator Olivier Polge, who just so happens to be Jacques’ son.

“Blue de Chanel has just the right amount of conviction and intensity to represent a man who refuses to be typecast. A man who dismisses facades and who is not afraid to let vulnerability show through his tough, disarming exterior,” Polge shared via release.
