The Ministers of Environment and Local Development follow up on the implementation of infrastructure projects for the waste management system

 

Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, and Major General Hisham Amna, Minister of Local Development, held a meeting to follow up on developments related to the implementation of infrastructure projects for the municipal solid waste management system in a number of governorates, and to follow up on the executive position of a number of projects being implemented. It was implemented in cooperation with a number of concerned parties, including the Arab Organization for Industrialization, the National Authority for Military Production, and development partners, in the presence of a number of relevant leaders in the two ministries.

 

 

 

Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of the Environment, stressed during the meeting the interest of all parties concerned with this file in the periodic evaluation of this system in terms of planning and implementation on the ground. To achieve tangible positive results, in light of the directives of   President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Republic, to develop and implement a system for the integrated management of municipal solid waste and work to ensure its sustainability, and the continuous follow-up by His Excellency the Prime Minister, Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, of the implementation of projects that take place within the framework of the system, to improve the solid waste system and raise the level of cleanliness in the various governorates of the Republic. Pointing out that the plan drawn up for the system achieves sustainability and continuity and has positive repercussions on improving public health and the environmental situation in Egypt.

 

The Minister of Environment explained that the meeting dealt with reviewing the executive status of infrastructure projects, including power stations. Intermediate, processing and recycling factories, sanitary landfills, collection, transportation and street cleaning equipment, overall implementation rates and evaluation of the implementation of the system since its approval until now, and the targets for the coming period, as well as the current situation of involving the private sector in collection, transportation and street cleaning services, and offering recycling factories to investors.

Dr. Yasmine Fouad pointed out that work has been done during the past period to develop the goals and some implementation mechanisms to keep pace with current and future changes, to overcome the challenges faced, and to aim to make the most of the financial resources available under the circumstances.

 

For his part, the Minister of Local Development stressed the interest that His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi gives to the waste system and his periodic follow-up of the system’s executive position on land. Governorates. The Prime Minister also holds meetings to follow up on improving the level of cleanliness of the main and secondary streets and squares in order to achieve citizens’ satisfaction, as well as the ongoing infrastructure projects in the governorates in cooperation with the relevant bodies and authorities in the state, led by the Arab Organization for Industrialization and the Ministry of Military Production.

Major General Hisham Amna pointed out the importance of continuous monitoring of the work of private sector companies operating in the municipal solid waste system in the various governorates of the Republic in a way that preserves the state’s right regarding its contracts with these companies, as well as the right of citizens to obtain good cleaning services. The Minister of Local Development also indicated the government’s keenness to localize and transfer industry and technology related to the field of solid waste in a strategic partnership with Egyptian private sector companies and cadres. Specialized local jobs that contribute to creating sustainable job opportunities for all workers in that system in implementation of the mandates of the political leadership, indicating that all ministries and agencies concerned with implementing integrated management of the waste system are seeking to localize various technologies for recycling and treating solid waste to reduce the volume of final rejects that will reach the safe sanitary burial cells.
