Next-Gen Safari: Apple Explores AI-Driven Features for Advanced Browsing

In the near future, Apple’s Safari browser could become “smarter.” According to AppleInsider, the tech giant from Cupertino is actively testing AI in the program, potentially introducing at least the Intelligent Search feature.

Currently, Apple engineers are testing this tool, which is built on the company’s proprietary large language model Ajax. With its help, Intelligent Search will be able to analyze articles on the web and provide users with concise summaries.

The new feature is likely to resemble some of the neural network extensions already on the market. For example, services like Chat-GPT and Perplexity from OpenAI synthesize internet information into summaries.

“Since this tool is developed by Apple, it will likely include additional privacy features, including possible on-device information processing rather than on company servers,” noted AppleInsider.

According to Statista, Safari is the default web browser on iPhones and Apple computers, accounting for about 18% of global search traffic. However, Apple’s browser lags behind Google Chrome in search traffic share.

In addition to Intelligent Search, Apple appears to be testing a feature called Web Eraser, which will allow users to remove unwanted content such as ads, images, and text from web pages. These settings will be remembered even after the user closes the tab or shuts down the browser.

There is a high probability that Apple will publicly announce Safari’s AI features at the upcoming WWDC developer conference, scheduled to begin on June 10, 2024.
