Fraudsters who stole 25 million worth of cryptocurrencies in 12 seconds are on trial in the United States

In the United States, two brothers stole $25 million worth of cryptocurrency in 12 seconds. They developed the crime scheme for several months. Deputy US Attorney General Lisa Monaco announced this to the public.

According to prosecutors, the brothers used specialized skills they learned at one of the most prestigious universities in the world. Both are graduates of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). About it reports BBC.

Anton Pere-Bueno, 24, and James Pere-Bueno, 28, are charged with fraud and money laundering.

The US Department of Justice said the robbery was the first of its kind. According to prosecutors, the brothers committed the theft in April 2023.

Fraudsters have developed a scheme that allows them to gain access to transactions awaiting confirmation in the system. At the right moment, they intercepted the transaction and received their victims’ cryptocurrency. Everything happened in a few seconds.

“The defendants’ scheme calls into question the very integrity of blockchain technology,” said prosecutor Damian Williams.

According to Ethereum representatives, the brothers refused to return the stolen funds and took steps to launder them.

Each of the defendants faces imprisonment for a term of more than 20 years.
