The unemployment rate in France remains stable at 7.5% in the first quarter of 2024

The unemployment rate in France stabilized at 7.5% of the active population in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the previous quarter, according to numbers published by INSEE, Friday May 17.

In detail, 6,000 additional unemployed people were counted during the last quarter, bringing their number in the whole of France (excluding Mayotte) to 2.3 million according to this method of calculation which allows international comparisons, specified the Institute National Statistics.

The unemployment rate, which the government wants to reduce to 5% in 2027, had reached its lowest level since 1982 at the end of 2022 and beginning of 2023, at 7.1% of the active population.

In the last quarter, the unemployment rate increased by 0.6 points for 15-24 year olds, to 18.1%, up 1.5 points over one year. It fell by 0.2 points for those aged 25-49 to 6.8%, and was almost stable for those aged 50 and over at 5.1% (+0.1 points). It decreases slightly (-0.1%) for women to 7.3% and increases slightly (+01%) for men, to 7.7%.

The halo around unemployment, made up of people considered inactive by the International Labor Office (ILO) because they want a job but are not looking for it or are not available, decreased slightly by 16,000 people and now concerns 1 .9 million people.
