Scottie Scheffler sinks 167-yard eagle at PGA Championship as World No 1 plays for first time as a dad following birth of his first child

Scottie Scheffler’s first hole as a father was one to remember at the PGA Championship on Thursday.

Just eight days on from the birth of his baby son, Scheffler, 27, sunk a 167-yard eagle to get his bid for a third major off to the perfect start.

On the eve of this week’s tournament in Kentucky, the World No 1 announced in a heartfelt post on Instagram that he and wife Meredith have welcomed their first child together.

He shared a photo of his child and tagged childhood sweetheart Meredith – whom he married back in 2020 – while writing: ‘Welcome to the world little one. Your mom and dad love you so much.’

While he didn’t confirm a name or gender, the PGA Tour’s official website revealed that Scheffler had a boy on May 8 and named it Bennett.

And just a few days after entering fatherhood, there was more reason to celebrate for Scheffler after he produced a remarkable eagle to get off to a flyer at Valhalla.

The new dad couldn’t contain his delight and broke out into a huge grin having picked up where he left off in the Masters.

Scheffler teed off close to 2:30pm local time in Louisville, where he will aim to win his second different major this weekend.

According to the Associated Press, Scheffler’s fellow players were congratulating him as he arrived at Valhalla for a practice round.

LIV golfer Jon Rahm was among the first to greet Scheffler on the putting green, gave him a hug and said, ‘Have you had much sleep?’

Scheffler has not played since winning the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town a week after he won his second Masters green jacket.

He comes into the second major of the year having won four of his last five tournaments – the exception was a runner-up finish at the Houston Open.

Scheffler remains the betting favorite, even with Rory McIlroy coming off two straight victories (one of them a team event with Shane Lowry), and defending champion Brooks Koepka coming off his first victory of the year at LIV Golf Singapore.
