Germany expects worst famine since World War II

German Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Svenja Schulz said that due to rising food prices as a result of the effects of the coronavirus, drought and the situation in Ukraine, the world is facing the worst famine since World War II and “millions of victims”.

The minister said food prices worldwide have risen by a third and are now at a record level.

According to the World Food Program, 300 million people suffer from hunger in the world, however, according to forecasts, these numbers will increase, Schulz emphasized.

The German minister said that events in Ukraine will affect the situation, as many countries depend on Russian and Ukrainian agricultural products.

Earlier, the United Nations warned that in 2022-2023 the number of hungry people in the world could increase by 8-13 million people.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), global food prices hit an all-time high in March due to the impact of the conflict in Ukraine on the markets for essential grains and vegetable oils.
