Diplomatic Shift: US, Saudi Arabia Close to Historic Defense Agreement

Cairo: Mei Kamal El-Din

The United States and Saudi Arabia are nearing the conclusion of a historic pact that would provide the kingdom with security guarantees and pave the way for diplomatic relations with Israel, provided its government ends the conflict in the Gaza sector. Bloomberg reports, citing sources.

The agreement would be a revised version of a treaty that ceased to be effective after Hamas militants attacked Israel on October 7.

Recent negotiations have accelerated, with many officials optimistic about reaching an agreement within a few weeks, sources say.

Such an agreement could potentially change the Middle East, according to Bloomberg. Besides enhancing the security of Israel and Saudi Arabia, the pact would strengthen America’s position in the region vis-à-vis Iran and even China.

If the US and Saudi Arabia agree to the treaty, they will confront Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with a choice: either join the agreement, which will attract investments, or stay on the sidelines. Key conditions for Netanyahu would include ending the war in the Gaza sector and agreeing to the path towards Palestinian statehood.
