ABU DHABI, 2nd May / WAM / Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Executive Council of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the competitions of the eighth edition of the Asian Jiu-Jitsu Championship will begin in Abu Dhabi tomorrow (Friday) with the participation of 1,500 male and female players from more than 30 countries. nation.
The championship competitions – organized by the Asian Jiu-Jitsu Federation and hosted by the UAE Federation at the Mubadala Arena in Zayed Sports City – will be held from May 3 to 8, with the adult category competitions being held between May 3 and May 5, and the youth and junior category competitions between May 6 and 8.
The players of our national jiu-jitsu team for the adult category successfully passed the official weigh-in procedures conducted at Mubadala Arena today as part of their participation in the tournament, in the presence of Mubarak Saleh Al Menhali, Director of the Technical Department at the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, Ramon Lemos, coach of the national team, and members of the technical staff, who expressed their confidence in the physical and psychological readiness. And technical for players.
Al-Menhali stressed that this participation of the team is one of its largest participation in continental and international tournaments, with a number of more than 100 male and female players in different categories and weights, which reflects the true desire to continue the process of achievements and maintain the title of the tournament that Abu Dhabi is hosting for the second time in three years.
Al-Menhali praised the efforts of the technical staff and players who worked hard and spent weeks of continuous training to prepare for this important continental entitlement, through intensive training camps that focused on raising technical and physical efficiency and enhancing the mental and psychological readiness of male and female players.
The current edition of the tournament witnesses the participation of 30 countries, including Afghanistan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Iran, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Palestine, the Philippines, South Korea, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Sri Lanka. , Syria, Tajikistan, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and Yemen, as well as the UAE, the host country of the tournament.
Kazakhstan leads the delegations of participating countries in terms of the number of players participating in the competitions with 300 male and female players, followed by the UAE with 129 male and female players, then Uzbekistan with 116, India with 68, Mongolia with 60, and South Korea with 58 male and female players.
The national jiu-jitsu team is looking forward to maintaining the championship title for the fourth year in a row after succeeding in winning the 2021 edition in Abu Dhabi, in Manama in 2022, and in Bangkok last year.
The national team won the title of the fifth edition of the tournament, which was hosted by Abu Dhabi in September 2021, after winning 18 colored medals, including 4 gold, 4 silver, and 10 bronze medals.
The team maintained its title for the second year in a row in the Bahraini capital, Manama, which hosted the sixth edition of the Asian Championship in March 2022, after achieving 16 medals, divided into 8 gold, 2 silver, and 6 bronze medals.
The sons and daughters of the Emirates continued their brilliance and place at the top of Asia by achieving the title of the seventh edition of the tournament in the Thai capital, Bangkok, in February 2023, where they collected 16 colored medals, 7 gold, 5 silver, and 4 bronze.
Marina Ribeiro, coach of the UAE women’s jiu-jitsu team, affirmed her complete confidence in the team’s ability to shine. She said: “We are now putting the final touches on the national team’s preparations, and the players went through an intensive training camp in the recent period, which allowed us to develop our strategy and plans for the tournament in an accurate and thoughtful manner. We are still continuing our training, but we have reduced the rates of physical training to reduce the risk of injuries. I feel the extent of the confidence and determination of the female players, and I wish them all the best.”
For his part, Sagiev Kuat, President of the Kazakh Jiu-Jitsu Federation, said: “Our team participating in the adult category competitions in this year’s edition of the Asian Championship includes 70 athletes, and last year we ranked second with 39 medals, 10 gold, 12 silver, and 17 bronze, and we aspire to perform better.” We are better this year and we are seeking to win first place. We have been preparing for this tournament since the conclusion of its last edition in Thailand. We explored the players’ weaknesses and worked to improve them, and today we are ready to participate.”
He thanked the Emirates Jiu-Jitsu Federation for its great efforts to promote the spread of this sport throughout the world, whether by organizing the most prominent tournaments, or providing a platform for communication and elevating this sport to new heights.
In turn, Alan Marcos Co, coach of the Philippine national team, said: “We have high hopes for our participation in the Asian Jiu-Jitsu Championship, and we have formed a strong team that includes 25 male and female players, including gold medalists from the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, including Annie Ramirez and Meggie Ochoa.” And Kayla Jenna Napolis, who also won the gold medal at the 2023 World Combat Games.
