Kate Hudson reveals her relationship with her biological father Bill Hudson is ‘warming up’ after being estranged most of her life: ‘I have no expectation’

After nearly a lifetime of estrangement from her biological father, Kate Hudson is opening up about where her relationship now stands with Bill Hudson.

In a new interview with CBS Sunday Morning, the Academy Award-nominated actress revealed that she still doesn’t have much of a relationship with the musician and actor, but then suggested that there may be some thawing to their icy past history.

‘I don’t really have one,’ the Almost Famous star began, when asked if she had any kind of relationship with her father, but she did offer up the slightest bit of hope by clarifying that ‘it’s warming up.’

She added with hesitation, ‘There’s warming up with this all happening. But it’ll be whatever it will be, you know. I have — I have no expectation of that with my father, you know. I just want him to be happy.’

The Los Angeles native was just 18-months old when her mother, Oscar-winning actress Goldie Hawn, split from her father in 1980, leading to their divorce.

Kate Hudson, 45, revealed she still didn’t have a relationship with her biological father, Bill Hudson, before clarifying ‘it’s warming up’ after being estranged through much of her life

Not long after her parents finalized their divorce two years later, in 1982, Hawn started dating actor Kurt Russell, which ultimately gave Kate and her older brother Oliver a dad that they could both depend on on an everyday basis.

The two young siblings ended up being raised in Snowmass, Colorado and the Pacific Palisades neighborhood in Los Angeles, California by her mother and Russell alongside Kurt’s son, Boston, and Kurt and Goldie’s son, Wyatt Russell.

Over the years both Kate and Oliver have openly shared how they were estranged from their father for significant periods of time, including their more formative years as kids and as adults.

In one instance back in 2015, Oliver took to Instagram to share a less than flattering comment about his dad Bill on Father’s Day.

‘Happy abandonment day… @katehudson,” the actor wrote, in a play on words for Father’s Day, alongside a childhood photo of himself and sister Kate with their estranged father.

In response, Bill Hudson sounded as if he had completely disowned his son Oliver, as well as his sister Kate, in an interview with the DailyMail.

‘I had five birth children but I now consider myself a father of three. I no longer recognize Oliver and Kate as my own. I would ask them to stop using the Hudson name,’ the musician, who’s best known for his 1970s group The Hudson Brothers, said at the time.

The Portland, Oregon native, 74, added, ‘They are no longer a part of my life. Oliver’s Instagram post was a malicious, vicious, premeditated attack. He is dead to me now. As is Kate. I am mourning their loss even though they are still walking this earth.’

It appears he lumped Kate into the conversation due to her Instagram post on that same Father’s Day in 2015 showing her with stepfather Kurt.

‘Pa, just simply….. Thank you. Happy Fathers Day. I love you to the moon and back. ✨ #HappyFathersDay,’ she wrote in the caption, which appears to have left her biological father feeling disrespected.

Bill maintained his daughter’s post ‘was an intimate shot and, as her father, I found it inappropriate and unsettling. I’ll leave it at that.’

He continued on with the finger-pointing, accusing his ex-wife Hawn of ‘willfully alienating’ him from their children through the years.

Over the years of mostly being estranged from her biological father, Kate and brother Oliver have both heaped praise on Kurt Russell for being the constant dad in their lives; they are seen with Russell and their mom Goldie Hawn in December 1988

In an interview on The Howard Stern Show in 2016 the Glass Onion actress claimed her mother ‘never spoke poorly’ of her biological father, and that even as a little girl, she understood that her dad leaving the family ‘didn’t have to do with me and Oliver.’

Despite all the disappointment surrounding their fractured relationship, Kate still had empathy for her biological father in that same conversation with Stern.

‘I do really recognize whatever those issue are are just something he has to live with and that must be painful for him, and so I forgive him,’ Kate shared, before confessing that any hurt she may have felt was tempered at least a little bit by having Russell around as her dad.

‘Kurt is not a perfect man, like no one is, but the trust that I got from him in terms of his dependability was just priceless for me,’ the Bride Wars star admitted.

Kate has previously said that Bill was in her life initially after her parents’ divorce but that soon dissipated to the point where she rarely saw him.

In keeping with the other side of the family, Kate and Oliver also have two sisters and a brother: Emily, 42, Zachery, 38, and Lalania, 18, as a result of their father’s other relationships.

The actress is currently out promoting her debut studio album, Glorious, which is scheduled to drop on May 17.

She released three singles ahead of its debut that includes Talk About Love, Live Forever and Gonna Find Out.
