In the US, a man who tried to kidnap Nancy Pelosi received 30 years

In the United States on Friday morning, 44-year-old David DePape, who attempted to kidnap Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi in October 2022, was sentenced to 30 years in prison. About it reported CBS television company.

DePape was sentenced by Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley in a federal courtroom in San Francisco. Prosecutors had asked for a 40-year prison sentence. DePape, wearing an orange jumpsuit, stood silently as the verdict was handed down.

DePape’s defense argued for a shorter sentence of 14 years, noting that their client had no prior criminal history and given his remorse for the crime.

The judge countered that DePape remains dangerous given his statements that he would commit other attacks despite apologizing to his victims.

Scott Corley also said DePape’s actions created an unprecedented threat, forcing all government officials to weigh the risk that their work could expose family members.

DePape received credit for time served for his 18 months in custody. The judge set the maximum sentence on each count – 20 years on one count and 30 years on the second count – which will run concurrently.

DePape was convicted late last year of attempting to kidnap a federal official and assaulting an immediate family member of a federal official. A jury found him guilty of both charges on November 16, 2023.

DePape’s early morning home invasion of Pelosi in October 2022 led to both federal and state charges.

During tearful testimony at a federal court hearing, DePape admitted that he broke into Pelosi’s San Francisco home on Oct. 28, 2022, intending to take her hostage. He also admitted that he beat Paul Pelosi with a hammer because he wanted to see an end to corruption in government.

The attack on Paul Pelosi, who was 82 at the time, was captured on police body camera just days before the midterm elections and sent shockwaves through the political world. notes CBS TV channel.

During the trial, DePape, a Canadian who moved to the United States more than 20 years ago, said he believed the media repeatedly lied about former President Donald Trump. In tirades posted on a blog and online forum that were deleted after his arrest, DePape described his plan to single-handedly “take down” a number of high-profile figures.

As a result of the attack, Pelosi suffered two head wounds, including a skull fracture, as well as injuries to his arm and hand.
