Stéphane Plaza slips up with a dubious reference and triggers the anger of a politician

One more controversy for Stéphane Plaza. The M6 host would have done better to turn his tongue in his mouth seven times before comparing himself to Christopher Columbus… We’ll explain.

On May 6, Stéphane Plaza made a big announcement to his Instagram subscribers: PAF’s most famous real estate agent is preparing to set up real estate agencies in several overseas territories. Yes, but he would have done better to refrain from saying it.

The misplaced reference by Stéphane Plaza

And for good reason, in the caption of a photo where we see him sailing all smiles, he had the extreme clumsiness of comparing his arrival in Martinique and Guadeloupe to that of Christopher Columbus in America… “Like Christopher Columbus, I sail the waves for a new adventure”he actually captioned it, before half-heartedly mentioning the possible filming of a show in the West Indies. “I can’t wait to share this great adventure of my network, which only grows from year to year!”then wrote the 53-year-old television man.

But this reference to the historical character really doesn’t work. And it is strongly criticized by many Internet users, starting with Serge Letchimy, the president of the Executive Council of Martinique, who judged the presenter’s comments “unacceptable and shocking”.

Stéphane Plaza gets taken over by a politician

And for good reason, if Christopher Columbus was first recognized for his discovery of America, he is especially singled out today for the crimes he committed against indigenous populations. “The evocation of this name constitutes an unforgivable insult to our people, Martinique and Guadeloupe”, therefore lamented the politician in a series of Tweets. Before explaining in depth: “By comparing yourself to Christopher Columbus, you identify yourself as a murderer and torturer, responsible for massacres who actively participated in the European genocide of indigenous peoples and who instituted slavery and the sex trafficking of women and children, some aged as young as only nine years old”.

“Mr. Plaza, I urge you to change course, because no ship should seek to dock on shores whose history and peoples it does not respect”, then wrote Serge Letchimy on X (formerly Twitter). And it’s up to him to firmly conclude: “Our hearts do not open to conquerors who come to impose their law; they welcome friends who wish to share our path. Welcome back”.

For the moment, Stéphane Plaza has not reacted to this controversy, simply removing this comparison from his legendary text. Too late… The damage is done! Remember that Stéphane Plaza has been talked about a lot lately. The star host of M6 – whose shows have not been canceled from the channel – will be tried within a few months for acts of physical and psychological violence. The presenter of Search for apartment or houseof House for sale And Apartment hunters is actually accused of domestic violence by three of his former partners. Placed under judicial supervision while awaiting his trial, he has denied everything since the start of the case last September.
