"Meteorology" A workshop is held on forecasting torrents and floods

Abu Dhabi, May 16 / WAM / The National Center of Meteorology organized a workshop entitled “Enhancing cooperation in the field of forecasting and managing flash floods” with the aim of discussing various initiatives and global best practices in the field of forecasting torrents and floods and enhancing the readiness of societies in dealing with their risks.

His Excellency Dr. Abdullah Al Mandoos, Director General of the National Center of Meteorology and President of the World Meteorological Organization, stressed the importance of the workshop, especially in light of the recent occurrence of extreme climate phenomena in various parts of the world, which confirms the necessity of concerted international efforts to strengthen hydrological monitoring and early warning systems for floods… such as The hydrological monitoring system of the Meteorological Organization and the global guidance system for flash floods, with the participation of the best experts from the National Center of Meteorology and the World Meteorological Organization.

For his part, Dr. Muhammad Al-Abri, Director of the Meteorology Department at the National Center of Meteorology, stressed during the opening of the workshop the importance of strengthening hydrological monitoring to contribute to efforts to reduce disaster risks.
During the workshop, Israa Al Naqbi, a meteorologist in the Meteorology Department at the National Center of Meteorology, presented a case study on historical exceptional climate events in the Emirates.
Dr. Falah Nouri, training specialist at the National Center of Meteorology’s training center, provided a detailed explanation of the weather and synoptic conditions that lead to the formation of intense convective systems over the UAE.
Alia Al-Hantoubi from the Numerical Forecasting Department at the National Center of Meteorology also gave a presentation on the hydrological forecasting system using numerical models, reviewing innovative approaches to flood forecasting.
The workshop witnessed the participation of prominent experts from various entities, including Ahmed Al Hammadi from the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, and Murad Elji, Head of the Meteorology Department at Abu Dhabi Polytechnic University, where they discussed the main factors that affect the accuracy of flood predictions, and effective strategies for flood management, while related experts presented The World Meteorological Organization has insights into flood forecasting initiatives and global best practices in this context.
The workshop comes in the wake of record rains and unprecedented floods that several countries around the world witnessed during the recent period, and provided a platform for exchanging knowledge and experiences in the field of hydrological monitoring and hydrological data.

It is noteworthy that last month, the World Meteorological Organization issued its report on the state of the climate in Asia 2023, which revealed that the Asian continent ranks first as the region in the world most vulnerable to disasters during the year 2023, as floods and storms caused great human and material losses, which confirms the importance of cooperation. The international community to take urgent measures to confront natural disasters.
