Offensive posts revealed after AFL bans Suns player

UPDATED: Alleged past social media comments made by Gold Coast AFL player Wil Powell have been unearthed after he was suspended for using a homophobic slur on the field.

Powell was on Thursday hit with a five-game ban by the league for using the slur towards a Lions player on Sunday.

Following that revelation, Nine newspaper The Age published comments allegedly posted by Powell’s Instagram account about three years earlier.

Under another football player’s posts Powell is alleged to have written, ”probably lost cos (sic) gay”, “you can’t surf gay”, “gay” and “pink looks good on you” under a series of images.

The Suns and the AFL would not comment on the social media posts.

The Age also spoke to gay rugby league icon Ian Roberts, who remains the only professional Australian league player to come out.

“With grown men, the battle is over. Grassroots stuff is what’s important,” Roberts told the newspaper.

“The AFL and the major codes should be investing in grassroots education if they really want to sort this out. That’s where it has to start – education, education, education.”
