Nepal’s Supreme Court rules on restrictions on Everest climbing

Nepalese authorities have issued 403 climbing permits for Everest this year and 945 for the world’s other highest peaks. The spring season is the most popular time of year for “conquering” the mountains; at this time the air temperature is most favorable and the wind is calmer than in other seasons.

Nepal’s Supreme Court has ordered the government to limit the number of mountaineering permits issued for Everest and other peaks. , the lawyer confirmed Friday, just as expeditions prepare for the spring climbing season.

The Supreme Court ruling was made at the end of April, but a summary of it has only now been published.

How reports France-24 channel, the full text of the resolution has not been published, and its presentation does not provide information about specific restrictions on the issuance of permits.

Until now, Nepal has issued permits to anyone who applies and is willing to pay US$11,000 to climb Everest, the world’s highest peak at 8,850 meters above sea level.

Last year, the Nepalese government issued 478 permits to climb Everest. This is the highest figure in the history of ascents.

Lawyer Dipak Bikram Mishra, who filed a petition to limit “visitors” to Everest, told AFP that the court’s ruling responded to climbers’ concerns about contamination of the mountain’s slopes and, of course, safety conditions.

At least four of the 11 deaths at the peak that year were linked to the overflow.

The Supreme Court decision also restricts the use of helicopters for emergency rescue operations only.
