Elon Musk in China to explore full self-driving features

Musk’s goal is to enable Full Self-Driving (FSD) capabilities in Tesla vehicles in China and use data collected within the country to enhance the training of its algorithms. While FSD is already available in countries like the US, it has not yet been introduced in China.

The announcement comes on the heels of a US report linking Tesla’s self-driving modes to at least 13 crashes, including one death. Despite these concerns, Musk expressed Tesla’s willingness to deepen its cooperation with China during a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang. Li assured Musk that the Chinese market remains open to foreign-funded companies.

China stands as Tesla’s second-largest market, with local rivals such as Xpeng seeking to take on Tesla by incorporating similar self-driving functions into their cars.

To address regulatory concerns, Tesla previously established a data center in Shanghai to process consumer data in compliance with local regulations.

Musk’s visit coincides with an investigation by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration into whether the recall adequately addresses safety issues related to Tesla’s driver assistance system. The agency noted cases in which drivers involved in accidents were allegedly not paying sufficient attention while using self-driving features.
