Vladimir Zelensky signed the law on the mobilization of convicts

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky on Friday signed a law on the mobilization of convicts. This was reported by “RBC-Ukraine” with a link to the law card on the Verkhovna Rada website.

According to the document, some categories of convicts and prisoners in Ukraine will be able to voluntarily serve in the army. This will be contract service during martial law.

The changes provide for conditional early release from serving sentences for convicts who agree to sign a contract. However, not everyone will be able to mobilize into the army. The decision is made by the court, the publication writes.

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine explained that the mobilized prisoners will serve in special forces. In addition, their service will require the conclusion of a military medical commission and the commander’s readiness to accept such a fighter.

Persons serving sentences or convicted for crimes against national security, for the intentional murder of two or more persons, for criminal offenses against sexual freedom and sexual integrity, and a number of others will not be able to be mobilized into the army. Restrictions will also apply to prisoners convicted of special serious corruption crimes.

The head of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, Denis Malyuska, previously stated that there are potentially 10 to 20 thousand convicts in Ukraine who could be mobilized for contract service.

  • In mid-April this year, President Vladimir Zelensky signed the law on mobilization. According to it, those sentenced to a suspended sentence can be called up for military service, except for those who have committed crimes against the national security of Ukraine.
