ABU DHABI, 3rd May / WAM / The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, whose activities will continue until the 5th of May, witnessed the organization of a discussion session entitled “Naguib Mahfouz’s Beginnings and Ends”, which shed light on the novels of the “Nobel writer” and his literary and cultural creations.

Participating in the session were Dr. Nizar Qubailat, Head of the Master’s Department at Mohammed bin Zayed University for the Humanities in Abu Dhabi, academic, writer and critic Dr. Ayman Bakr, academic and critic Dr. Khairy Douma, and poet and critic Abdo Wazen.

The session touched on the genius of the novel, the style, and the themes that led its author to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, starting from the beginning trilogy, represented by “The Futility of Destiny, Radopes, and The Struggle of Thebes,” to the ending duality, “Echoes of Autobiography, Dreams of the Convalescence Period,” which reflected the vision of Naguib Mahfouz’s personal interest in many issues, as he went through three stages: historical, realistic, and intellectual symbolism.

Dr. Nizar Qubailat said, “We got to know Naguib Mahfouz’s literature in literary paths, and we began to study its merits and how he took the Arabic novel to an advanced stage, and we became acquainted with how Naguib Mahfouz drew the Egyptian neighborhood,” explaining that his novels are renewed and young, trying to weave history with the young reality.

Dr. Khairy Douma explained that Naguib Mahfouz’s beginning with the historical novel is due to his influence on national identity as he was one of the sons of the 1919 revolution in Egypt, as he had a project of 20 historical novels through which he monitors the history of Egypt, explaining that many of the critics who dealt with Naguib Mahfouz explained the close relationship between his novels. In Egyptian history, including Edward Al-Kharrat.

For his part, Abdo Wazen pointed out that the most prominent symbols of Naguib Mahfouz’s literary works were the novels “Echoes of Autobiography,” published in 1995, and “The Novel Dreams of the Convalescence Period,” published in 2006. These two books are among the important books that Mahfouz published in his old age, and for example, a special experience. , reminiscent of the so-called dream literature in world literature.
