Aviation: despite positive results, Ryanair announces the closure of its Bordeaux base

Ryanair saw, on Monday May 20, its annual turnover increase by 25% to more than 13 billion euros in 2023, with more than 183 million passengers transported. Based on the low-cost model, the company is accused of seeking to circumvent labor law and of chasing public aid to set up its bases in airports, particularly in France. And it has decided to close its Bordeaux base, now considered too expensive.

This decision by Ryanair goes down very badly with the unions, in particular Stéphane Salmon, the president of the SNPNC-FO, the main union of hostesses and stewards: “Ryanair decides to leave and sell itself elsewhere to other territories to better plunder them later.” If Ryanair justifies its decision by “increasing costs” at Bordeaux-Mérignac airport, the airport management claims to have simply put limits on its financial requirements. The airport had precisely been singled out in October 2023 by the Court of Auditors for the aid judged “non-transparent” And “considerable” paid to certain companies.

The fate of the 90 employees now affected by the closure worries Stéphane Salmon: “In their employment contract there is an illegal clause which says that from one day to the next, Ryanair can decide to send them anywhere on another European base, randomly, to Poland or to Romania, this is not Not possible.” Hence the request for the opening of a real job protection plan, to be able to reclassify them in France. Ryanair has other bases there which have sometimes closed before reopening a few years later, such as that of Marseille.
