Bennett confirms interest in Rabbitohs reunion

UPDATED: Wayne Bennett has confirmed discussions are underway regarding a return to South Sydney next year as head coach.

After chief executive Blake Solly told media on Wednesday morning the club were keen to bring Bennett back into the fold, the 74-year-old has now revealed he would be open to continuing his legendary coaching career at Redfern.

Solly and Bennett’s comments come less than 24 hours after Jason Demetriou was sacked following two extraordinary board meetings at Heffron Park on Tuesday.

Demetriou was an assistant coach under Bennett when the Bunnies made the 2021 NRL grand final, ultimately losing to Penrith, before taking over the top job.

After winning only one of seven games to start 2024, following a horror finish to the 2023 season, Demetriou was dumped by Souths, who are now hunting a replacement.

In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, the seven-time premiership winner confirmed he had been in contact with Solly and spruiked the potential of a return.

”We’ve had some discussions. I wouldn’t be talking to them if I didn’t [have interest], I wouldn’t be wasting my time,” Bennett said.

“I’d know what’s expected of me there, but I’d need to address what players they’ve got and not got. They are the conversations to be had. I will worry about all that later when I make a decision on whether I want to do it or not.
