Demetriou's job in jeopardy as Rabbitohs 'scars' revealed

Jason Demetriou is facing an uncertain future at South Sydney, with a three-game deadline on his head coaching job rumoured after a heavy loss to the Roosters.

After the side bombed out of the finals picture in horrific fashion in 2023, the Rabbitohs have started this season in similar fashion, suffering three-straight defeats.

According to senior reporter Andrew Webster on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show, club officials could cut ties with Demetriou after round six if the side fails to improve.

The rumour mill has now entered overdrive regarding a potential return for Wayne Bennett, who is off-contract at the end of this year with the Dolphins, while club icon Sam Burgess could also be back in the mix after early success at Warrington.

Demetriou took over from Bennett at the end of 2021 and while the initial signs were strong, has failed to deliver despite South Sydney’s talented roster.

NRL legend Billy Slater believes the coach needs to put the past behind him, while also urging Demetriou to recall Lachlan Ilias for a must-win clash with Canterbury.

“The scars still must be there from last year, because you don’t say this is the most pressure you’ve been under in your career after three losses,” he said on Nine.

“It was a heavy loss on Friday night, but the scars must still be there.
