Tottenham and Crystal Palace are ‘interested in bringing Marcus Edwards back to the Premier League’ from Sporting CP… and the Portuguese frontrunners name their price for ex-Spurs youth star

Tottenham and Crystal Palace are reportedly interested in bringing Marcus Edwards back to the Premier League from Sporting CP.

The Spurs youth product has been flying in Portugal and Sporting are top of the Primeira Liga with him on the right wing.

Mauricio Pochettino likened him to Lionel Messi when he was 17 but he only played 15 minutes for Spurs – in an EFL Cup third-round match against Gillingham in 2016 – and left in for Vitoria SC in Portugal 2019 after loan spells elsewhere.

He joined Sporting in 2022 and has established himself as a key player, scoring 21 goals and notching 25 assists in 99 games.

The Portuguese giants will snub any offers below £17m with Spurs and Palace ‘remaining vigilant’ towards him, as per A Bola

While they are eager to keep him, he is not someone they are completely closed off to selling.

His contract with Ruben Amorim’s side runs until 2026 and there is a lot to like at the Portuguese capital club, who could win a Portuguese league and cup double.

In November, it was reported that Spurs have a buy-back clause that would allow them to pay £34m – just 65 per cent of his £52m release clause.

That was on the back of a season where he registered 12 goals and 14 assists, but A Bola’s new report indicates Sporting could listen to offers which just meet the £17m threshold.

Edwards can play multiple roles in a forward line and offer Ange Postecoglou versatility.

He has previously stated his desire to return to England, saying: ‘It’s home, so of course I want to come back there [to the Premier League] one day. I just focus on what I’m doing here for now.’

In 2022, he said: ‘I have grown up in a lot of ways, I’m 23 and last time I was at Tottenham, I was only 17, 18, I was only a baby so I have definitely grown up.

‘I was just a kid, you know what kids are like. I was just a kid growing up, so I could be like, whatever. Of course I was naturally a bit of a Spurs fan but I was playing for the club and went to all the games and stuff.

‘Everyone has a different journey. For me it worked out, going over to Portugal. It took me a long time though.’

He has played against Tottenham for Sporting, scoring in the Champions League in a 1-1 away draw in 2022 and celebrating wildly.
