'You can't say it': Gould's tip after Hasler 'outburst'

Phil Gould has issued some timely advice to NRL coaches about the art of delivering a spray to their playing group, after Des Hasler was filmed giving Gold Coast both barrels on Saturday.

The Titans sunk to a third loss from three games this season, going down to the Dolphins 30-14.

In the aftermath, Fox League leaked dressing room vision of two-time premiership coach Hasler lambasting his players for another dire performance.

Gould often says NRL coaches get about one effective spray per season, before the tactic wears thin on players.

“I used to say to coaches (about) half time talks – take a deep breath and understand the ramifications of what you’re about to do,” Gould reiterated on Wide World of Sports’ Six Tackles with Gus podcast.

“The one question I ask myself is what do you want to say, and what do they need to hear right now? And that might be different to what you want to say.

“What you really want to say, you can’t say. You can’t say it because it’s not going to have the effect you want.

“It’s your emotion, and once that happens, if they get a feeling that it’s about you, you are now on the way out, simple as that.
