Tennis: not yet physically ready, Rafael Nadal gives up playing the Monte-Carlo tournament

We will still have to wait to see the “bull of Manacor” play again. Rafael Nadal announced on Tuesday April 4 on X (formerly Twitter) that he was withdrawing from the Monte-Carlo tournament (Monaco), which will begin on Monday April 8. The 37-year-old Spaniard, who has not played since January 5 in Brisbane (Australia), did not specify a precise reason for the injury.

“I am not going to play in Monte-Carlo. My body is simply not going to allow me to do so. And even if I work hard and put in the maximum effort every day with all the will to play and participate in tournaments again which were very important for me, the truth is that I cannot play today. You have no idea how difficult it is for me not to be able to play these events”, he wrote on X. In 2023, Rafael Nadal was only able to compete in two tournaments due to his various injuries. In 2022, he also skipped Monte-Carlo before lining up in Madrid and Rome and winning Roland-Garros.

“The only thing I can do is accept the situation and try to look to the immediate future while keeping the enthusiasm and desire to play in order to give myself a chance for things to improve,” concluded the winner of 14 Porte d’Auteuil trophies. In mid-February, Rafael Nadal declared that Roland-Garros was one of his main objectives, just like the Olympic Games played on Parisian clay.
