Japanese Ministry of Commerce published a list of 164 categories of industrial goods that will be prohibited from being supplied to Russia.

The new sanctions affect lithium-ion batteries, gas pipes, motor oil for cars, thermostats, nitrocellulose products and woodworking machines. In addition, the export of photographic equipment, hand-held power tools, tungsten powder, molybdenum, cobalt, zirconium, and rhenium is prohibited. The sanctions will come into force on April 17.

In addition, Japan will ban the import of Russian diamonds from May 10, except for industrial use. The Group of Seven (G7) countries made this decision back in December.

  • Japan has supported Ukraine since the Russian invasion by joining the sanctions. Since August 9, the Japanese authorities have stopped exporting cars with engines larger than 1.9 liters, hybrid cars, yachts, locomotives and trains, dyes, photo and cinematographic material, cement, tiles, stone, asphalt and much more.
  • Since April 2022, Japan has banned the export of luxury cars worth more than six million yen (about 43 thousand dollars) to Russia.
  • Previously, Japan banned the supply of vaccines, medical equipment, equipment for nuclear facilities and oil and natural gas exploration to Russia.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin, the country’s top officials and their relatives came under personal sanctions from Japan. Russia also lost its most favored nation status in trade. At the same time, Tokyo announced that it would provide military and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.
  • In turn, Russia added Japan to the list of “unfriendly countries” and stated, which comes out of the dialogue with Japan about establishing joint economic activities in the Southern Kuril Islands. Russia also banned Japanese sailors to fish off the South Kuril Islands. The Russian-Japanese agreement of 1998 gave them this right.
