"May he have a farewell worthy of the legend that he is" : tennis champions are worried about Rafael Nadal’s package in Monte Carlo

You are missing only one being and everything is depopulated. And it’s even more true in tennis when Rafael Nadal is not there as Sunday 7 begins April the season on clay at the Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo, surface on which the Spaniard, aged 37 years, built his entire legend. Rafael Nadal gave up on Thursday without any other justification than that he is not physically ready. Is he injured ?

David Massey, the tournament director gives the explanation. “He did everything to prepare. The problem is with his serve. He’s embarrassed so he didn’t want to play if he wasn’t able to play well.” And all the players understand this, including Ugo Humbert, the French No. 1 and 14th in the world.

“He’s a legend of this sport, especially on clay. It would be good for the fans to see him back on court as soon as possible. That’s what I hope in any case”wishes the French player who confides that he “would like him to do Roland again this year”.

Seeing Rafael Nadal again at Roland-Garros, everyone wants it, without exception. Novak Djokovic first. The world No. 1 regrets the absence of the Spaniard. “It’s important for our sport to have Rafa on the courtshe explains, especially this year because it may be the last season of his career. It’s a shame because he’s a legend.”

Coming back to competition is one thing, being competitive is another. And in the current state, not sure that Rafael Nadal can become one again, fears Nicolas Mahut, former 37th in the world. “Today, it’s true that there is concern because we want to see him again on a field at a decent level for him and that he can have a farewell worthy of the legend that he is. We still have the feeling that there, he is trying to fight to come back and finish correctly.”

For 15 months, Rafael Nadal has only played two competitive matches, in Brisbane last January. But worse still, he has not played a tournament match on clay for almost two years and his victory at Roland-Garros in 2022.
