Fans slam the ‘SCANDALOUS’ decision to award Liverpool a late penalty against Man United after slow-motion footage emerges showing the incident between Harvey Elliott and Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Fans have taken to social media to slam the decision to award Liverpool a late penalty against Manchester United on Sunday after new footage emerged.

Luis Diaz fired Jurgen Klopp’s men ahead at Old Trafford and the visitors were in full control before Bruno Fernandes pounced on an error from Jarell Quansah to level things up after half-time.

Kobbie Mainoo was the man of the moment in the 67th minute, turning to give United a surprise lead, scoring a fantastic striker.

In the final minutes of the match, Harvey Elliott appeared to be tripped by Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the box, with the referee pointing to the spot.

However, new slow-motion footage has emerged since the match and fans are not convinced that a spot-kick should have been awarded.

The footage, uploaded by a Man United fan, showed Wan-Bissaka commit to the challenge before Elliott knocked the ball away from him before appearing to hook his foot under Wan-Bissaka’s trailing leg.

With the footage going viral, plenty of fans had their say as one said: ‘Didn’t see the game yesterday but how was this given?’

Another suggested that Premier League referees are ‘incompetent’ and slammed the use of VAR, which reviewed the incident but didn’t overturn the onfield decision. 

‘I always laugh when I think about English referees,’ they began. ‘Many are so incompetent and sentimental, it’s funny.

‘Do these guys understand what the VAR is or what it’s used for?’

This sentiment was shared by a fellow supporter, who compared it to the late penalty that Man United conceded to Chelsea on Thursday night.

They wrote: ‘I have watched this video a million times and also watched the penalty given to Chelsea a million times WTF are these decisions? 

‘Why in the world does VAR exist if penalties like this are being given!?’

Another Man United supporter reached out to PGMOL, the body responsible for refereeing games in English football.

When are @FA_PGMOL going to be held accountable for decisions like this?’ they fumed. ‘The three penalties against United in last two matches are nothing but scandalous.’

A final fan suggested that the decision ‘looks worse in slow motion’, suggesting that if VAR were not shown the footage in a slower speed the penalty would not have been given.

The point opens up the race for the Premier League  title, with Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal all hoping to be crowned champions by the end of the campaign.
