Paris 2024: "The water quality of the Seine will be there"assures the Paris prefecture after surveys "alarming" carried out by an NGO

“The water of the Seine will be swimmable to allow the events to be held next summer”. This is the promise renewed by the Paris prefecture,in a press release published Monday April 8. This communication follows the revelation by the NGO Surfrider Foundation of the state “alarming” waters of the Seine. The prefecture invokes “very heavy rain (250,000 ml over 3 months, double that of 2023) which degraded the quality of the water” since the beginning of 2024, affirming that these “weather conditions are not those of summer”.

LThe NGO Surfrider Foundation revealed on Monday the presence of several bacteria, notably Escherichia coli and enterococci, at levels above the standards set by the International Swimming Federation. SOf the 14 measurements carried out by the association, over the last six months, 13 reported bacteria in excessive quantities.

108 days before the start of the Paris Olympic Games, the “Bathing plan (…) finishes rolling out”assures the Paris prefecture, specifying thatLdisinfection units of water treatment plants (…) were not in operation during the samples taken by Surfrider”, between September 2023 and March 2024. They will be activated in the second quarter of the year and during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Likewise, around 20 boats out of the 250 at the dock must still be connected to the sanitation network, otherwise they will be “displaced for the Games”.

As a reminder, several events of the next Paris 2024 Olympic Games (triathlon, marathon swimming and paratriathlon) must be contested in the Seine, in the heart of Paris, at the Alexandre III bridge.
