The Albanian government is finally waking up to the grim nature of Israel’s fighting.

Israel’s swift investigation into the killings of seven aid workers by Israeli forces in Gaza has rightly failed to satisfy the victims’ families, their employer World Central Kitchen and the Australian government.

The Israeli investigation has admitted that the killings were a “serious mistake” involving “misidentification, errors in decision-making” and failure to follow orders and rules of engagement. He claimed that information about the convoy was not shared within the Israel Defense Forces and that the aid logos marking the vehicles were not visible at night. Two officers will be dismissed, two others reprimanded and the case will be referred to military prosecutors.

Australia stated that Israel has failed to appreciate the seriousness of the killings and called for full accountability and transparency and “appropriate action” over the “absolutely inexcusable” deaths. The government rightly rejects apologists’ claims that it is simply fog of war or friendly fire failures, or that it is all Hamas’s fault, or that self-defense justifies it all.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong has appointed Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin as Australia’s special adviser to review the investigation. Wong insisted that evidence be preserved, telegraphing the government’s lack of confidence in the Israeli military justice system.
