Barack Obama and the New England Patriots lead the congratulations for UConn after Huskies are crowned back-to-back champions with dominant victory over Purdue in title showdown

Former US President Barack Obama and the New England Patriots led the congratulatory messages for the UConn Huskies, who repeated as national champions on Monday night.   

UConn became the first team to repeat as men’s college basketball champions since Florida in 2006 and 2007 by taking down fellow No 1 seed Purdue 75-60. 

The Huskies won every game in this year’s NCAA Tournament by double digits to cement themselves as one of the most dominant teams in recent memory.  

In addition to defeating Purdue, UConn won a national-championship rematch from last season against San Diego State, had a 30-0 run against Illinois, and beat upstart Alabama in the Final Four.  

UConn has now won six national titles over the last three decades and are tied for third all-time in titles with North Carolina. It only trails UCLA (11) and Kentucky (eight).

‘Congrats to the back-to-back national champs, @UConnMBB! Great season by an incredibly impressive team,’ Obama said. 

‘REPEAT CHAMPIONS‼️ Congratulations, @UConnMBB!’ the Patriots stated on social media, alongside a fancy graphic of the Huskies. 

‘Congrats to UConn on back to back National Championships. They are one of the most fundamentally sound, dominant and versatile teams we have ever seen,’ former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III said. 

The Huskies total margin of victory throughout the tournament was the highest of all-time.  

UConn won its six games in this year’s NCAA Tournament by a combined 140 points, besting the previous record heled by North Carolina in 2009 of 125.
