Champions League: Bayern Munich grabs a spectacular draw on Arsenal’s pitch

Even when nothing goes well, Bayern remains valiant in the Champions League. The Munich club, left behind in the race for the Bundesliga title and in the midst of a crisis, won a valuable draw on the Arsenal pitch (2-2), Tuesday April 9, in the quarter-final first leg of the Champions League. Almost as crazy as the match between Real Madrid and Manchester City, this style opposition resulted in a spectacular draw, which keeps the suspense alive for the return match.

Bukayo Saka gave Arsenal the lead in the 12th minute with a delightful curling strike. But the Gunners, masters of the ball (59% possession), struggled throughout the match to contain the enthusiasm of the Bavarian attackers. While Arsenal had not conceded a single goal at home in the Champions League this season, the speed of Bayern’s wingers made each of the four London defenders suffer in the first half, and broke the lock at the Emirates Stadium.

Gabriel was guilty of a risky recovery which benefited Serge Gnabry, well launched in depth and quicker than Ben White (23rd). Then a new counter blitz from the Germans was illicitly interrupted by William Saliba, causing a penalty to be transformed without blinking by Harry Kane (32nd), accustomed to causing misfortune to Arsenal supporters (15 goals against the Gunners in 19 matches) . The fourth thief in the rearguard, Jakub Kiwior, was replaced by Oleksandr Zinchenko at half-time. Coaching rewarded with clean sheets in the second half, and the equalizer from Leandro Trossard (76th) on a service from Gabriel Jesus, two other entrants.

Arsenal failed to win the first leg at home, but remains alive in this double confrontation, as in the race for the Premier League title. Bayern Munich, which remained on two dishonorable defeats (3-2 against Heidenheim and 2-0 at Dortmund) and which is 16 points behind Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, will try to reach the semi-finals at the end of the return match at the Allianz Arena (April 17). A meeting to clear his horizons for the end of the season, at the end of which his coach Thomas Tuchel should leave the club.
