The Israeli army announced early Tuesday, April 9, that its new C-Dome defense system, the naval version of its Iron Dome anti-missile shield, had been used for the first time to shoot down an aircraft “suspicious”.

Monday evening, the military reported an alert in the area of Eilat, a city located at the southern tip of Israeli territory, on the edge of the Red Sea. “Naval forces identified a suspicious aerial target crossing Israeli territory. The target was successfully intercepted by the C-Dome naval defense system”, the army said in a brief statement. In February, Eilat was the target of ballistic missiles from Yemeni Houthi rebels, supporters of Hamas, which were intercepted.

The C-Dome is an anti-missile shield installed on Saar-6 corvettes of the Israeli navy, based on the model of the Iron Dome, the system used for more than a decade by Israel to intercept projectiles targeting its territory, in particular Hamas and Islamic Jihad rocket fire from the Gaza Strip. The Israeli army has invested in recent years in this new protection at sea in order, in particular, to protect the country’s important gas deposits in the eastern Mediterranean.
