Man United legend Wayne Rooney questions whether Marcus Rashford should ‘move away and have a fresh start’ as he insists misfiring England star ‘doesn’t look happy’

Wayne Rooney believes Marcus Rashford ‘doesn’t look happy’ at Manchester United and questioned whether his best option would be a ‘move away from the club’.

The United star produced another underwhelming performance in Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool in what has been another difficult campaign for Rashford.

Having starred with 30 goals in all competitions during Erik ten Hag’s first season in charge, Rashford’s return of just eight strikes so far this campaign has seen criticism aimed at him.

Rashford hit out at previous comments attacking his commitment after viral clips highlighted his lack of energy when defensively pressing and Rooney has offered career advice to the England international.

Rooney – Man United’s all-time record goalscorer – played alongside Rashford during the 26-year-old’s breakout year at the 13-time Premier League champions and has advised his former team-mate to consider his future.

‘He has had a very difficult season. We all know he has got the ability and got all the attributes to be a top world-class player,’ Rooney told Premier League productions.

‘That’s the frustrating thing. Last season, he went and scored a lot of goals. But this season, he hasn’t kicked on. He doesn’t look happy when he is playing.

‘You wonder, is his best option to move away from the club and have a fresh start? But he is a Manchester lad.

‘I would love to see him get his career back on track at the club, go on to score goals and try to help the club win trophies. But he certainly has had a difficult season,’ he added.

Rashford signed a new five-year contract until 2028 last summer worth a basic £300,000-per-week, meaning any potential transfer is likely to demand a huge fee.

He has previously denied wanting to leave the club after joining United’s academy at the age of five and quickly climbing his way through the youth team ranks at Carrington.

Paris Saint-Germain could hold the key to offering Rashford a route out of Manchester after his representatives previously held talks with staff at the Ligue 1 champions.
